Cardigan Welsh Corgis are generally a healthy breed but, like all dogs, are susceptible to some diseases. Because of their long shape, back problems are among the known issues, including damage to the spinal discs. Symptoms include unsteady walking, difficulty going up and down stairs or a reluctance to climb.

Spirited and athletic, steady and dependable, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a big dog on short legs.

By that I mean his body is more heavily-boned and stronger than you might think, and also his temperament is that of a larger dog.

With their short legs and long body, Cardigan Welsh Corgis don't need or want miles of running exercise. But they must have several daily walks and a fenced yard in which to stretch their legs and romp. Just as important as physical exercise is mental exercise, which means interesting activities to do. Cardies are intelligent herding dogs who like to keep busy.

Cardigan Welsh Corgis are smart, but they do have an independent mind of their own (as do most herding breeds) and are not pushovers to raise and train. They can be manipulative or willful. You must show them, through absolute consistency, that you mean what you say. To teach your Corgi to listen to you, "Respect Training" is mandatory. Read more about Cardigan Welsh Corgi Training.

Cardigan Welsh corgis are actually large dogs with short legs but tend to be easy-keepers just the same. Watch their diet and make sure they get exercise or they can become overweight, which is a real health hazard in a dog with the long back.

Cardigan Welsh corgis need daily exercise and do best if they are trained and have jobs to do, even if that is just fetching a ball. Intelligent dogs left to their own devices can become destructive. A firm but patient hand is often needed in training, and a sense of humor can be invaluable. Cardigans compete successfully in almost all performance events including herding and agility.

Cardis will guard the family and home, and many retain at least some of their ancestral herding instincts. Socialize them early and well. They are generally good with children, but they need to be taught that running children are not livestock to be rounded up by a nip on the heels. Early exposure to other dogs helps with their occasionally tough attitude.

In these hard economic times many people cannot afford to have their Corgis groomed by professionals. Though this active breed is fortunate enough not to require rigorous grooming, the occasional wash and clip is needed. With a few simple supplies, the average, every day Corgi owner can do all the grooming he or she needs.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi my be small, but they pack a lot of dog into a little body. Originally used to herd cattle and hunt rodents in Cardiganshire, Wales; Corgiw were strong working dogs that took their jobs seriously. They would nip the heels of the cattle, and their small bodies enabled them to avoid being kicked. Today, the Corgi is still used on farms and ranches, but is also an energetic family companion. They are good with other pets, make reliable watchdogs, and are trustworthy around children. Corgis have a mind of their own but still have a desire to please people. They pack a large personality, which varies from clownish and attention seeking, to thoughtful and introspective.

Despite their high energy level, Cardigan Welsh Corgis only need a moderate amount of exercise to keep them happy. They are adaptable, and can happily dwell on a ranch, in a home with a yard, in an apartment or condominium. They should be walked daily, and if they don't have a yard to play in at home, should be allowed to run in a park at least once a week.

Despite their need for moderate exercise, Cardigans need a lot of mental stimulation. As with other breeds who have roots as farm dogs, they like to stay busy. They excel in agility training and advanced obedience. If not properly exercised physically and mentally, Corgis can become anxious and destructive when left alone.

Cardigans, like other farm dogs, are excellent watchdogs. They sound the alarm that uninvited people or animals are on the horizon, which can get out of hand if not nipped in the bud at an early age. Proper socialization is important, so that the Cardigan Welsh Corgi doesn't become mistrustful of all strangers. They will also bark if left alone for long periods of time, so apartment and condo dwellers should take this into consideration before adopting a Cardigan.

The Corgi breed are, quite literally, fit for The Queen. Famously a favourite of Queen Elizabeth II, Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs and her Pembroke Corgis often join Her Majesty during public appearances. The Queen has favoured Corgis for more than 30 years during her reign and the animals have been depicted across the world in works of art and statues.
