Though not as boisterous or argumentative as some terriers, the workmanlike Lakeland is still animated and intense.
Always alert and ready to go, he has strong working instincts and loves to exercise outdoors. Unfortunately, his curiosity and tenacity can get him into tight spots (literally) unless your fences are secure and he is well supervised.

Like all terriers, Lakelands must be taught at an early age that they are not the rulers of the world. The toughness that makes them suited to killing vermin can frustrate you when you try to teach them anything. Terriers can be stubborn and dominant (they want to be the boss). You must show them, through absolute consistency, that you mean what you say. To teach your Lakeland to listen to you, "Respect Training" is mandatory. Read more about Lakeland Terrier Training.

Lakeland Terriers are a determined force to reckon with if they decide to initiate or accept a challenge to fight. Most terriers have strong instincts to chase and seize small fleeing creatures. This can make for conflict if you own a cat. It may be much worse than that if you own a pet rabbit or hamster.

I have a lakeland x border terrier and he has fantastic temprement, especially with the kids. When i first got him, the local vet said "ooh you'll have your hands full with him, lakelands have really strong terrier instincts." but to be honest he's was far far easier to train than my yorkshire terrier.
I get him clipped 3 or 4 times a year and have found he doesnt really moult which is always good!!

minimum grooming required for a lakeland terrier. my gran had a pair and they were tough little cookies! in the days when dogs used to roam the streets!
plenty of excercise, ball games in the park would be great, get them socilaised at a young age and firm hand in training but great hardy little dogs.

Like all terrier breeds, the Lakeland is a fearless dog with a heart of gold. They love to run and chase and thrive on outdoor activity, and will play with the zeal of a puppy, even as an adult. Lakelands are good family dogs and enjoy the company of older, well behaved children. They are reserved with strangers, but are generally not aggressive toward people. Lakelands, though they love the company of people, have an independent streak and have often been compared to rebellious teenagers.

Lakies are intelligent and pick up on training quickly, however they like to do things on their own terms, so patience is a must. Keeping the training sessions varied and as interesting as possible helps to keep them engaged in the process. Lakies will not respond to a wishy-washy leader. If their boundaries are not consistent, they will take that as a cue that they, the dog, are king and you, the person, are his subject. Always train a terrier with a positive attitude and lots of praise, as harsh treatment will backfire.

The Lakeland Terriers were originally bred in the harsh but beautiful countryside of the English Lake District to hunt foxes. The purpose of the Hunt was to destroy the fox that would prey on sheep and lambs thereby affecting the livelihood of those dependent upon farming. The Lakeland had to be able to follow the fox over rugged peaks and steep cliffs in all weather and when the fox went to ground the Lakeland had to follow and either bolt the fox or kill it underground.
Its work dictated its shape and size. It had to be small, but agile enough to crawl long distances, legs not too short so as to enable the dog to jump. It was also required to walk or jog with the Hunt from the Kennels to the scene of operations, and then work. Necessity also dictated the shape of the head, as where a Lakeland can get its head the body will follow.

Square and sturdy Lakelands, standing less than 15 inches at the shoulder and weighing about 17 pounds, are small dogs. But don’t tell them that. With their cock-of-the-walk swagger, Lakelands personify the old dog-lover’s cliché “a big dog in a small package.” They come in several colors; some have a sporty saddle mark on the back.
With folded V-shaped ears, straight front, rectangular head, and a mischievous twinkle in their eye, Lakelands are the blueprint of a long-legged British terrier.

The Lakeland Terrier should do well on a high-quality dog food, whether commercially manufactured or home-prepared with your veterinarian’s supervision and approval. Any diet should be appropriate to the dog’s age (puppy, adult, or senior). Some dogs are prone to getting overweight, so watch your dog’s calorie consumption and weight level. Treats can be an important aid in training, but giving too many can cause obesity. Learn about which human foods are safe for dogs, and which are not. Check with your vet if you have any concerns about your dog’s weight or diet. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times.

The Lakeland Terrier always seems like she's walking on sunshine. They're super happy, very funny dogs. So if you're going to live with a Lakeland Terrier, you're going to need a sense of humor. These dogs have been described as impish, mischievous, and clownish. Expect surprises; you won't be disappointed.

Lakeland Terriers are very curious dogs that love nothing more than to be out exploring and investigating. They have a strong hunting instinct, so should be exercised in secure areas and also be well trained at a young age to ensure they respond to recall, which may be challenging to teach as, once on the scent of something, it will be difficult to regain their attention! Again, due to their strong hunting instinct, they should be socialised with smaller household pets at a young age. For more information on how to socialise your dog and train using reward-based techniques, take a look at our dog behaviour page. Given the right socialisation, they can make great family pets.

This dog needs to be taken on a daily, brisk, long walk, jog or run alongside you when you bicycle. In addition, it will enjoy running and playing off the leash at regular intervals in a safe area. The Lakeland Terrier is certainly suitable for sports activities such as catch and agility skills.
