Although not as popular as the Rottweiler or the German Shepherd, the Hovawart is nonetheless a stoic member of the German canine elite. Originating from the regions of Harz and Black Forest in Germany, the Hovawart’s name means “a guardian of estates.” The breed was first created by the German barons of old to guard their castles and estates. Although a very ancient breed, the Hovawart has not survived as a result of direct ancestry but through an effort of resurrection by dedicated breeders.

Hovawarts were bred to be hard workers and require at least an hour’s worth of rigorous exercise each day. When not provided with an outlet to release their excess energy these dogs can become stubborn and destructive. They make excellent jogging, running and hiking partners. Like most working dogs, Hovawarts too require a “meaningful” task to which they can devote themselves to each day in order to be happy.

The Hovawart loves its family and wants to please them more than anything. Strangers will be accepted if the owner accepts the visitor. However, unwelcome visitors will be barked at and possibly attacked. This breed does well with children, especially children in the family. Dominance makes them difficult to socialize with dogs because they may become aggressive. However, small animals will find a kind companion with the Hovawart. Training them is time consuming and often difficult. Stubborn and free willed, this breed can be hard to handle especially the non-neutered males.

The Hovawart can be a great family dog if you have time and can be consistent. Family members will get love and affection from this dog. However, this breed does not like strangers and does horrible with other dogs. Small animals, on the other hand, will get along well with this breed. Apartment living is not suitable for this active breed, because they enjoy playing in a large yard. This breed is tough to train and should have an experienced owner. Exercise is needed for this breed or they will be destructive. Hovawarts can live in any climate but they prefer cool weather.

My favorite dog by far. Unfortunatley they are a bit demanding when you want to keep them right. They need a familiy and a big garden, plus at least an hour walk every day. But when you treat them right they are the best companion you can wish for.

The Hovawart is a medium-temperament working dog with versatile usage and has a very good nose. He is kind, has an even disposition and protective instinct, is self-confident and has the ability to take stress. His balanced body proportions and special devotion to his family make him an outstanding companion, watch, guard, tracking and rescue-dog.

What you feed your dog is an individual choice, but working with your veterinarian and/or breeder will be the best way to determine frequency of meals as a puppy and the best adult diet to increase his longevity. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times.

The Hovawart looks somewhat like a Golden Retriever. The head is powerful with a broad, rounded forehead. The skull is about the same length as the muzzle, with a well-defined stop. The nose is black with well-developed nostrils. The teeth meet in a scissors or level bite. The dark to medium brown eyes are oval in shape. The triangular drop ears are set high and wide apart. The front legs are straight. The feet are round, compact and strong, with well-arched, tight toes. Dewclaws may be removed. The long-haired, dense coat is slightly wavy, lying flat. There are longer hairs on the chest, belly, back of the legs, and the underside of the tail. Coat colors come in black and gold, black or blond.

The Hovawart has a strong, deep-throated bark. This breed will be calm inside the house provided it receives enough daily exercise. It is determined, obedient and affectionate, especially toward its master. Loyal to the family. Excellent with children when well-socialized, well exercised and see humans as alpha. They are highly devoted and have a strong sense of territory and will not generally wander far away. Remaining playful and puppy-like in its old age, the Hovawart is reserved with strangers but is a pleasant family dog. Good natured and even-tempered. This brave dog is protective, alert and a good watchdog. It will protect your property against intruders with great passion. When its handler indicates that visitors are welcome, it will accept them immediately. The Hovawart has a good scenting nose. It is intelligent and can be trained to a high degree, learning quickly what you expect of it. The best results are achieved with extremely consistent, loving and well-balanced training. Unneutered males can be very challenging to handle. The Hovawart is a dominant breed, that requires a firm, experienced owner. If owners are not there to communicate their leadership the Hovawart may be aggressive with other dogs but it does well with non-canine petsin the household if well socialized. If owners do not treat their Hovawarts in such a way that their canine instincts are fulfilled with the proper leadership and release of physical and mental energy, it can cause them to start fear biting, or be rather timid. Hovawarts are ideally suited for tracking, avalanche rescue, as watchdogs and for defense situations.

Hovawarts are not recommended for apartment life. They are moderately active indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard. They prefer cool climates and can sleep outdoors. They are outstanding watchdogs, especially for stables, fields and country houses.

Hovawarts are one of the longest-lived and healthiest of the working dogs due to the stringent breeding regulations of the International Hovawart Federation. Breeding within the HCNA means that before dogs can be bred, they must pass health, temperament and conformation tests and their pedigrees must be evaluated for genetic diversity.

The Hovie is a loyal and affectionate dog who is best suited to living with people, rather than kennels. They like to know you are close by, but won't always be under your feet like some breeds. They are good within the family and fine with children if raised with them. They can be reserved with strangers but are rarely aggressive towards them unless provoked. They are brave and protective, but will be okay with strangers if you say everything is alright.
