The Fox Terrier is one of the most curious, intense, and impulsive of the terriers -- indeed of all breeds.

Untiringly active and playful, he has a special passion for ball chasing -- which really helps with exercise -- and he seldom walks when he can run.

The Fox Terrier loves the outdoors but must always be kept on-leash (he is a fast, agile, independent chaser) or in a secure yard, preferably supervised, because his ingenuity and relentless hunting instincts may drive him over or under the fence.

Fox Terriers are a determined force to reckon with if they decide to initiate or accept a challenge to fight. Most terriers have strong instincts to chase and seize small fleeing creatures. This can make for conflict if you own a cat. It may be much worse than that if you own a pet rabbit or hamster!

Fox Terriers, though more amenable to training than many other terriers, must be taught at an early age that they are not the rulers of the world. The toughness that makes them suited to killing vermin can frustrate you when you try to teach them anything. Fox Terriers can be stubborn and dominant (they want to be the boss) and will make you prove that you can make them do things. You must show them, through absolute consistency, that you mean what you say.

The Smooth Fox Terrier is a loving, yet often dominant dog. They love their family and children. However, they are extremely aggressive towards dogs and small animals. The breed is playful and friendly with their family and with very well known dogs, but they should not be trusted in off-leash areas. Without sufficient exercise, Smooth Fox Terriers can become destructive. They also have a propensity for being dominant and will sometimes bark constantly. Because the dog is protective of its property, it makes a good guard or watch dog, but this same trait can cause the dog to become snappy with its owners.

The breed does not require much grooming. They should be brushed once a week at least and bathed when needed. However, they do need plenty of exercise. Smooth Fox Terriers enjoy running in a yard or being walked once a day. They like off leash areas but cannot be trusted around any other animals. If not properly socialized, they may become uncontrollable. The breed also requires obedience training at a young age to prevent some of these problems.

Anyone who leads an active lifestyle and likes to take his dog along will be perfectly suited to this breed. The smooth fox terrier is friendly, energetic and outgoing. These dogs are wonderful companions for children and never tire of all sorts of games.

The coat of the smooth fox terrier is easy to keep looking neat. A daily brushing will keep it clean and prevent excessive shedding in the house. Daily exercise will naturally keep the smooth looking fit.

The Fox Terrier (Smooth) has an intense and inquisitive temperament. They absolutely must explore every new place they visit often seen checking every corner of the room for something to hunt. These bundles of energy and lean muscle are always up for a game and never back down from a challenge. Early socialisation is important especially with other dogs.

The Smooth Fox Terrier should do well on a high-quality dog food, whether commercially manufactured or home-prepared with your veterinarian’s supervision and approval. Any diet should be appropriate to the dog’s age (puppy, adult, or senior). Some dogs are prone to getting overweight, so watch your dog’s calorie consumption and weight level. Treats can be an important aid in training, but giving too many can cause obesity. Learn about which human foods are safe for dogs, and which are not. Check with your vet if you have any concerns about your dog’s weight or diet. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times.

Energetic, inquisitive, bold, feisty, playful, mischievous, independent, and adventurous describe the Fox Terrier. This breed lives to run, chase, and explore. He is usually fairly reserved with strangers. He tends to bark and dig.

This breed needs to be taken on a daily, long walk or jog. If it is possible, these dogs will love to run free in a safe area. Keep your dog on a leash if there are small animals around. The urge for these dogs to hunt is strong and they are likely to take off chasing a small animal.

The smooth coat needs a minimum of grooming – just a quick brushing with a rubber hound glove or curry brush a couple of times a week to keep shedding under control. He’ll shed a little year-round and go through a seasonal shed in spring and fall. Other than that, just keep his ears clean and his nails trimmed. He's definitely meant to be a no-fuss dog.

The Smooth Fox Terrier is friendly, alert, active, and lively without being high-strung. Through his keen expression and alert bearing, ears up and tail quivering, the Smooth Fox Terrier gives the impression of a dog ready to go anywhere and take on any task. The Smooth Fox Terrier is bold but not aggressive with people. They are affectionate with children but may be too active for some. Although seldom used for hunting now, the Smooth Fox Terrier retains a strong prey drive and will dig tirelessly after any underground vermin.
