They're pretty chill dogs, and doesn't have that high of a hunting instinct.

Smart, friendly and always alert, the Finnish Lapphund is the perfect family companion. Boasting an active personality and an intelligent mind, they are lovable and very affectionate. Put simply, this is a home dog which just loves its owner and enjoys being surrounded by a loving family.

The Lapphund has an extremely thick coat which sheds seasonally and will therefore require regular brushing in order to keep flying fur well and truly under control. Try to brush their coat on a weekly basis to keep it clean and remove any dead hairs.

In addition to physical activity, the Finnish Lapphund needs a healthy dose of mental stimulation. As a herding dog, this breed will analyze a situation before deciding how to handle it. Fortunately, the Finnish Lapphund enjoys training and working with people. This breed is relatively easy to train and enjoys using its finely-tuned observational skills to learn what is asked of it. These are fairly “soft” dogs. They respond best to positive reinforcement and reward-based training, using praise rather than punishment. Finnish Lapphunds have strong noses and excel at scent-related activities, such as tracking, scent discrimination work and search and rescue.

The Finnish Lapphund is a wonderful "all-around" dog with its intelligence and eager to please disposition. They are a breed quick to learn and coupled with their non-aggressive attitude towards people, children and other dogs they are fast gaining popularity as a wonderful companion breed.

As a breed that tends to be naturally submissive with people, which should not be confused with shyness, they are gentle dogs and great dogs for families with children. Lappies should be taught early the rules of household behavior and children should be taught to be kind, gentle and to not to mistreat your dog/puppy. As long as both behaviors are taught early and with consistency, your Lappy will be a wonderful family companion. It is wise to remember that all children should be supervised by an adult when in the company of a dog, whether it is a puppy or adult.

The Finnish Lapphund is not an aggressive dog and will generally not go looking to start trouble however, they won't back down either. Puppy introduction is generally quite easy as the puppy will know it's place in the "dog pack". Adult introduction, especially with two intact dogs reasonably close in age requires a bit more and it is recommended that you ask your breeder for guidance.

You can expect your Finnish Lapphund to live up to 17 years if cared for correctly. They have fairly few health complaints, but can succumb to hip dysplasia (when the hip moves abnormally), and eye problems such as cataracts. Check-ups, proper nutrition and the correct shots at the Vet will ensure that any illness is caught early on and your new pal will enjoy a long and healthy life.

My uncle has one of these and it's a very strange dog to say the least. That dog got raised around cats and acts like a cat 90% of the time.

My dog looks exactly like a Swedish lapphund which is basically like the Finnish but black.

She's a street dog from Cyprus though so not sure what she is for sure

They're beautiful dogs. Although their voluminous coat makes them appear larger, Finnish Lapphunds are really medium-sized dogs, with males averaging 18-21 inches tall and females ranging from 16-19 inches. They have a straight or wavy coat with a soft dense undercoat. They also have a sweet, soft expression that's sure to win hearts.

The Finnish Lapphund is sometimes referred to as a “thinking breed.” Although, as with most herders, they can be strong-willed, Lappies take to training and do well in dog sports, like agility and rally. They also perform well as tracking dogs, therapy dogs, and in search and rescue.

Despite similarities in appearance to the Australian Shepherd, Samoyed, and Siberian Husky, he's his own breed. He is calm, friendly, and attached to his human pack, yet with the intelligence, quickness, and courage of a dog used to working in tough Northern conditions. It's no wonder the breed is becoming such a favorite!

The Finnish Lapphund does not have very special living needs. Despite having been bred to help herd reindeer, the Lapphund can be kept inside apartments or homes with limited space. The Lapphund is known to be able to adapt itself to different environments and circumstances.

The Finnish Lapphund is an intelligent, affectionate and versatile herding dog at heart. He likes to keep his people - and anything else he can herd, including kids and household pets - tightly together. These adaptable animals thrive in almost any environment. Their dense coats protect them from bad weather, but they also do well in warm climates. Finnish Lapphunds make terrific family companions, especially for active outdoorsy people. They can be a bit aloof around strangers, but they are not known to be shy. They are observant, focused and watchful. Lapphunds tend to be quite vocal and energetic, which is not surprising given their original role as reindeer-herders. This breed gets along well with other dogs and they are good with children.

The Finnish Lapphund has many great qualities; they are smart and quick to learn, make great alert dogs, are wonderful family companions and often referred to as a clown. However, not every dog is suited to every situation and environment and as with any other breed, the Lappy is not the dog for everyone. Please take the time to learn about the Finnish Lapphund and talk to breeders before adding one to your family. To help you get started in your research you will find some basic information here and elsewhere on the FLCA site.

Finnish Lapphunds, with their luscious coat, sweet spitz-like face, and profusely coated tail that curves over the back, are instantly recognizable as Nordic dogs. Lappies stand about 20 inches at the shoulder and are surprisingly muscular and substantial for their inches. Quick and agile, they move effortlessly and can go from a trot to a full gallop in a second flat.
