Steady and good-natured, yet bold and athletic, the stocky, muscular Entlebucher Mountain Dog (also known as the Entlebucher Sennenhund) enjoys romping and roughhousing.

Pulling a cart or sled, herding, agility, fetching balls, playing Frisbee, and weight pulling are productive outlets for his high energy. He likes to keep busy and needs something to do. He is not an apartment dog.

Entlebucher Mountain Dogs are versatile working dogs, capable of learning a great deal, but they have an independent mind of their own and are not pushovers to raise and train. Some are willful, obstinate, and dominant (they want to be the boss) and will make you prove that you can make them do things. You must show them that you mean what you say.

If you have small children, or if you or anyone who lives with you is elderly or infirm, I do not recommend Entlebucher Mountain Dog puppies. Young Entlebuchers (up to about two years old) can be bulls in a china shop. When they romp and jump, they do so with great vigor, and things can go flying, including people. The temptation to play roughly and nip at moving people is simply too strong in many young Entlebuchers.

The Entlebucher can be territorial and will bark to announce the presence of strangers or arrival of guests. He's aloof with people he doesn't know, and like any dog, he needs early socialization to learn how to behave around strangers and other dogs. He loves his kids but, because he also loves roughousing, he must learn to be gentle with little ones. He may try to "herd" his kids by nipping at their heels.

This is an active working breed with above-average exercise needs that loves to pull carts and herd any other animals, including people. Daily walks are important, but walks alone are not sufficient to satisfy this breed’s exercise requirements. Entlebuchers should get at least one hour a day of vigorous exercise in order to stay physically and mentally fit. They love having a job to do and thrive on being trained to jump, run agility courses, track or play Frisbee. They also enjoy romping with other dogs at the dog park and going on long hikes with their owners. Entlebuchers excel at competitive canine sports, such as obedience, agility and rally. They are quick, tough and very physical and they need quite a bit of room to stretch their legs. This is not a breed for urban apartment-dwellers.

They are an extremely intelligent, willing to please breed. Tux even is trained to bring me a roll of toilet paper when I ask for one. I think you can also throw in a bit of stubbornness.

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog, who is also known as the Entle, or, was originally bred to be a hardworking dog and used for such arduous tasks as herding cattle and pulling milk carts in the Swiss Alps. As family pets this medium dog breed is likely to draw on his heritage, being able to leap up to give his owner a kiss on lips from a young puppy! Known as cattle leaps, the Entlebucher Mountain Dog’s ancestors used this technique used by the pup’s ancestor’s to herd cattle in the Swiss Alps. The active and energetic Entlebucher Mountain Dog requires firm and consistent training to reign in it’s herding tendencies. Without it, expect your Entle to jump and generally play rough, making the breed difficult to keep with small children. Entles are a dog breed known to suffer from separation anxiety and causing destruction around the home when left alone. Avoid heartache down the track by training your Entlebucher Mountain Dog to be able to spend time at home alone. Start with small bursts of time, even isolating your pup at home to get the dog used to spending time solo. When you do go out, your Entlebucher Mountain Dog will need tasks and activities to occupy her smart mind and relieve her boredom. Chew toys are a must. While the Entlebucher Mountain Dog is very intelligent, its strong personality and at times stubborn nature makes this dog breed a challenge to train, and this dog may not be suitable for inexperienced or timid dog owners. Your Entle puppy will require consistent and firm training. The Entle is known for its deep and loud bark, and makes a wonderful family watchdog.

The Entlebucher is a working breed which requires frequent exercise. Its favorite activity is herding; it may even try to herd children in the family. Entlebuchers enjoy cold weather and love to run and play off the leash whenever possible.

Great Watchdog Ability: This dog will bark and alert its owners when an intruder is present. It exhibits very protective behavior, acts fearless toward any aggressor, and will do what it takes to guard and protect its family.

Prized for its agreeable nature, intelligence and devotion to family, the Entlebucher Mountain Dog makes a wonderful companion, especially for active, outdoorsy people. Entlebuchers are smart, friendly, agile and extremely loyal. They have an excellent work ethic; given a job to do, they transform from a high-spirited playmate to a tireless worker of commanding presence. Despite their independent and self-confident nature, Entlebuchers bond extremely closely with their people and want to be by their side every waking moment. This is not a breed for the casual owner, as they remain active and highly energetic throughout their life. The Entlebucher will not do well left unattended in the back yard for long periods of time. Because of the breed’s guardian traits, thorough socialization is required starting in early puppyhood. Entlebuchers are typically suspicious of strangers and some can be quite territorial. They are protective but not aggressive by nature. They have an authoritative bark and make good watch dogs. In general, they are playful and good with children.

We've owned out Ente, Lucy, for 2 years and love her. They were right- not a good first dog- she is VERY active and needs to be out running around a lot- also does not like being alone. She is a love, and we would never own another kind of dog. Our breeder is in Sanford ME .

We love our Bowie. Only a year old, handsome, smart as a whip, well trained. A fantastic breed of dog. Fully socialized as well, people and dogs.

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog has a good natured, affable and devoted character, but the breed can be a little unsure around strangers. They are very loyal dogs and develop strong ties with their owners and family. This means that they can be prone to suffering from separation anxiety and should be carefully accustomed from puppyhood to being left alone but never for very long periods of time. The breed is well-known for being good with children and makes a good family dog, although it is a fairly large and active breed so children should be supervised especially when they are small. The breed also acts as a good guard dog if needed.
